How speed conversion works

Every speed converts through one base unit - meters per second. Each unit has a fixed factor: 1 km/h is 0.2778 m/s, 1 mph is 0.44704 m/s, 1 knot is 0.51444 m/s. The tool turns your value into m/s, then divides by the target unit's factor. So 60 mph becomes 26.82 m/s, then 26.82 / 0.2778 = 96.56 km/h. Because the maths is a single multiply and divide, the answer updates the moment you type.

Pace instead of speed

Runners and cyclists usually think in pace - how long it takes to cover one kilometer or mile - rather than raw speed. Pace is just the inverse: at 12 km/h you cover a kilometer in 60 / 12 = 5 minutes, shown as 5:00 min/km. The panel above turns whatever speed you enter into both min/km and min/mile, so an 8 mph treadmill setting instantly reads as a 7:30 min/mile pace.

Common speeds for reference

  • Brisk walk: about 5 km/h (3.1 mph), a pace of 12:00 min/km.
  • Marathon world record pace: roughly 20.9 km/h, near 2:52 min/km.
  • UK motorway limit: 70 mph is 112.7 km/h.
  • Cruising airliner: around 500 knots, which is 926 km/h.

For distances rather than speeds, use the length converter; to work out how long a journey costs, try the fuel cost calculator; and the unit converter bundles speed with every other measure in one place.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert mph to km/h?
Multiply miles per hour by 1.60934. For example, 60 mph is 60 x 1.60934 = 96.6 km/h. To go from km/h to mph, divide by 1.60934 (or multiply by 0.6214).
How fast is a knot?
One knot is one nautical mile per hour, which is 1.852 km/h or about 1.151 mph. Ships and aircraft use knots because a nautical mile equals one minute of latitude.
What running pace is a 10 km/h?
Running at 10 km/h is a pace of 6:00 minutes per kilometer, or about 9:39 minutes per mile. The converter shows both pace equivalents whenever you enter a speed.
How do I convert m/s to km/h?
Multiply meters per second by 3.6. For example, 10 m/s is 36 km/h. This works because there are 3,600 seconds in an hour and 1,000 meters in a kilometer.
