How weight conversion works
Each unit has a fixed weight in grams: a kilogram is 1,000 g, a pound is 453.592 g, an ounce is 28.3495 g and a stone is 6,350.29 g (14 pounds). To convert, the tool turns your value into grams, then divides by the target unit's gram weight. So 5 kg is 5,000 g, and 5,000 / 453.592 = 11.02 lb. Whenever stone is one of the chosen units, an extra line shows the weight in the familiar stone-and-pounds format, since 70 kg reads more naturally as 11 st 0.3 lb.
Worked examples
- Bathroom scales: 80 kg is 80 x 2.2046 = 176.4 lb, or 12 st 8 lb.
- Recipe in ounces: 250 g of flour is 250 / 28.35 = 8.82 oz.
- Baby weight: a 3.5 kg newborn is about 7 lb 11 oz.
Stone, pounds and everyday use
Stone is still the standard way to talk about body weight in the UK and Ireland, while most of the rest of the world uses kilograms and the US uses pounds. One stone is exactly 14 pounds, which is why 11 st 4 lb is the same as 158 lb. Because these systems mix so freely - kg on a passport, stone at the doctor, pounds at the gym - a converter that speaks all three saves a lot of guesswork.
