Volume Converter
Convert any volume between liters, gallons, cups, pints, fluid ounces and cubic meters - live as you type.
How the conversion works
All volumes here pass through a single base unit - the liter. Your figure is converted to liters first, then divided into the unit you want. That keeps every result consistent no matter which unit you start from. The key factors are:
- 1 US gallon = 3.78541 L = 128 US fl oz
- 1 UK (imperial) gallon = 4.54609 L = 160 UK fl oz
- 1 US cup = 236.588 mL (US customary)
- 1 US pint = 473.176 mL = 2 cups = 16 US fl oz
- 1 cubic meter = 1,000 L
Cooking quick reference
Recipes jump between spoons, cups and milliliters constantly. These are the US measures most recipes assume - handy when a US site gives cups and your jug shows millilitres.
| Measure | Milliliters | Equivalent |
|---|---|---|
| 1 teaspoon (tsp) | 4.93 mL | 1/3 tablespoon |
| 1 tablespoon (tbsp) | 14.79 mL | 3 teaspoons |
| 1 fluid ounce | 29.57 mL | 2 tablespoons |
| 1/4 cup | 59.1 mL | 4 tablespoons |
| 1/2 cup | 118.3 mL | 8 tablespoons |
| 1 cup | 236.6 mL | 16 tablespoons |
| 1 pint | 473.2 mL | 2 cups |
| 1 quart | 946.4 mL | 2 pints |
Dry volume versus weight
Cups measure volume, not weight, and that trips up baking. One cup of flour weighs about 120 g, but a cup of sugar is roughly 200 g and a cup of water is 236 g - the same volume, very different masses. That is why serious baking recipes give grams. Use this converter for liquids and for matching a recipe's stated volume, but reach for a scale when a gram figure is offered, because converting cups to grams depends entirely on the ingredient.
The gallon and cup trap
The single biggest source of error is mixing US and UK measures. A UK gallon is about 20 percent bigger than a US gallon, and a UK pint (568 mL) is bigger than a US pint (473 mL). If a British recipe says a pint of milk, that is 568 mL, not the 473 mL a US pint gives. Fuel economy figures fall into the same trap: US miles per gallon look worse than UK miles per gallon for the same car simply because the US gallon is smaller. When in doubt, work in milliliters or liters. For dry-ingredient weights instead of volumes, use the weight converter; for oven settings, the temperature converter converts Fahrenheit to Celsius, and the all-in-one unit converter keeps every category together.
