How to read the result

The result panel merges both versions into one view. Text that only appears in the changed version is highlighted with a green background - those are your additions. Text that was in the original but removed shows in red with a strikethrough. Everything left plain is unchanged. The counters above tally how many words or lines were added and removed, giving you a quick sense of the size of the edit.

Word mode vs line mode

Use word mode for prose: essays, emails, product descriptions and anything where a reworded sentence is the unit of change. It pinpoints the exact words that moved so a one-word tweak does not light up the whole paragraph. Use line mode for code, CSV data, logs and lists, where a line is the meaningful unit and you want to see which lines were touched, the way a version-control diff works.

Practical uses

  • Checking what an editor changed between two drafts
  • Spotting the difference between two config files or code snippets
  • Confirming a copy-paste is identical to the source
  • Reviewing contract or policy wording changes before signing off

Comparing large blocks pasted from PDFs? Run each side through the line break remover first so stray wrapping does not show up as false changes. You can also find and replace to normalise wording, or count the words in each version.

Getting a clean comparison

A diff is only as good as the two inputs. If one version was copied with different line wrapping, invisible trailing spaces or curly quotes swapped for straight ones, those show up as changes even though the text reads the same. When that happens, normalise both sides first: strip stray breaks, standardise the quotes, then compare. In line mode, remember that a single changed character marks the whole line as removed and re-added, because the line is the unit - switch to word mode if you need to see the exact character that moved.

Everything is computed with a well-tested diffing algorithm the moment you stop typing, so you can paste, tweak an option and see the result update without a button press. Because it is all local, there is no size limit beyond what your browser can hold, and no privacy trade-off for pasting sensitive drafts.

Frequently asked questions

What does a text diff checker do?
It compares two blocks of text and highlights exactly what changed - which words or lines were added and which were removed. Additions show on a green background and deletions show struck through in red, so you can see the edit at a glance.
What is the difference between word mode and line mode?
Word mode compares text word by word, which is best for prose and single paragraphs where small wording changes matter. Line mode compares whole lines, which suits code, lists and configuration files where you care about which lines changed rather than individual words.
Is my text sent to a server?
No. The comparison runs entirely in your browser with JavaScript, so nothing you paste is uploaded. It is safe to compare private documents, contracts or source code.
Can it compare two versions of a document?
Yes. Paste the old version on the left and the new version on the right. The result panel shows every insertion and deletion, plus a running total of additions and removals so you can quantify how much changed.
