Countdown Timer

Set a countdown for any length of time and get a clear alarm when it reaches zero - with quick presets and a live tab title.

00:00

A countdown timer that does not drift

When you press start, the timer records the exact moment it should finish and counts down to that fixed target. On every screen refresh it simply measures how long is left until that end time. This means the countdown stays accurate even if the browser throttles timers in a background tab - come back and it shows the true remaining time rather than a value that fell behind.

Presets and custom times

Tap a preset for the usual suspects - a 1-minute rest, a 5-minute steep, a 25-minute focus block - or type any combination of hours, minutes and seconds. A 3-minute egg, a 20-minute power nap, a 45-minute revision sprint: enter the numbers, hit start, and the big display and progress bar make the remaining time readable across the room.

The alarm

At zero the timer plays a short repeating beep synthesised in your browser and flashes the display and the tab title, so you notice even if you are looking at something else. Prefer silence? Tick Mute alarm for a purely visual finish. Because the sound is generated live there is nothing to download and no tracking.

Tips

  • Keep the tab visible if you need the alarm to fire at the exact second - sleeping tabs can delay audio.
  • The tab title mirrors the countdown, handy when you are working in another window.
  • Need to count up instead? Try the stopwatch.
  • Working in focus blocks? The Pomodoro timer cycles work and breaks for you.

To add up several timed durations afterwards, the time calculator handles hours and minutes arithmetic.

Frequently asked questions

Does the timer keep running if I switch tabs or lock the screen?
The countdown is worked out from a fixed end time, so switching tabs will not make it drift - it shows the correct remaining time when you return. The alarm may be delayed by the browser if the tab is fully asleep, so keep the tab visible if exact-second alarming matters.
Why does the browser tab title show a countdown?
While the timer runs, the page title updates with the time left so you can watch it from another tab without switching back. When the timer finishes the title flashes "Time is up".
Is the alarm sound a file I have to download?
No. The beep is generated on the fly with the Web Audio API, so there is nothing to download and no external request. Tick the mute box if you want a silent, visual-only countdown.
What is the maximum time I can set?
You can set hours, minutes and seconds, up to 99 hours. Use the quick presets for common durations like 5, 10 or 30 minutes, or type an exact time in the boxes.
