Enter the bill, pick a tip percentage and split it between any number of people - every figure updates as you type.

Tip percentage

How the tip is worked out

The maths is a single percentage of the bill. The tip is bill x (tip% / 100), the total is bill + tip, and if you are splitting, each share is total / people. On a 60 dollar bill at 18% the tip is 10.80, the total is 70.80, and split between two that is 35.40 each. This calculator rounds each figure to the nearest penny and never touches a server, so it works offline too.

How much should you tip?

Tipping norms vary a lot by country and by service. As a rough guide:

  • US restaurants - 15% is the floor, 18% to 20% is normal, more for exceptional service.
  • UK and Europe - 10% to 12.5%, and often already added as a service charge.
  • Cafes and takeaway - rounding up or dropping loose change is plenty.
  • Bars - a small amount per drink, or 10% on a tab.

If a service charge is already printed on the bill you generally do not need to add more. When a menu says "service not included", the percentage buttons above cover the usual range.

Tip amounts at a glance

For a quick sense of the numbers before you reach for the calculator, here is what the common percentages come to on a few round bills:

120.0018.0021.6024.00

A quick mental shortcut

To sanity-check the number without a phone, find 10% by shifting the decimal one place to the left, then scale it. 10% of 84 is 8.40, so 20% is 16.80 and 15% sits halfway at 12.60. If you tip in cash but pay the bill by card, remember to base the tip on the pre-service-charge figure so you are not tipping twice. That trick is just the percentage calculation done in your head. Splitting an awkward total? The discount calculator and VAT calculator use the same one-line percentage maths.

Frequently asked questions

What is a normal tip percentage?
In the US, 15% to 20% of the pre-tax bill is standard for table service, with 18% a common default. In the UK and much of Europe a 10% to 12.5% service charge is typical and is often already added to the bill, so check before you tip on top.
Should I tip on the total before or after tax?
The polite convention is to tip on the pre-tax amount, but many people simply tip on the total for speed. On a 50 dollar meal with 5 dollars of tax, tipping 20% on the pre-tax figure is 10 dollars versus 11 dollars on the post-tax total - a difference of one dollar.
How do I split a bill and tip evenly?
Add the tip to the bill to get the grand total, then divide by the number of people. For a 90 dollar bill with an 18 dollar tip split between 3 people, each person pays 108 divided by 3 = 36 dollars.
How do you calculate an 18% tip quickly in your head?
Take 10% of the bill by moving the decimal one place left, halve that to get 5%, then add a bit more. For a 40 dollar bill: 10% is 4, so 20% is 8, and 18% is just under that at about 7.20.
