How the currency converter works

Every conversion starts from a single set of daily reference rates published by the European Central Bank. The tool fetches them once, stores the base rate for each currency against the euro, and then does the maths locally in your browser. To convert from one currency to another it first expresses your amount in euros, then multiplies by the target currency's rate - so USD to GBP is really USD to EUR to GBP under the hood. Because the rates are cached for 12 hours, repeat conversions are instant and keep working if you drop offline.

Mid-market rate vs the rate you actually get

The figure here is the mid-market rate - the midpoint between the global buy and sell prices. It is the honest headline number, but it is not what lands in your account. Banks, cards and bureaux de change add a margin (often 0.5% to 3%) and sometimes a fixed fee. As a rough guide, if the mid-market rate says 100 USD is 92 EUR, a typical card might give you nearer 90 EUR after its markup. Always treat this as an estimate for budgeting rather than a quote.

Worked example

Say 1 EUR = 1.08 USD and 1 EUR = 0.85 GBP. To convert 500 USD to GBP: 500 / 1.08 = 462.96 EUR, then 462.96 x 0.85 = 393.52 GBP. The converter shows the exact single rate it used (for example 1 USD = 0.787 GBP) and the date those rates were published, so you can always sanity-check the number.

Frequently asked questions

Where do the exchange rates come from?
Rates come from the Frankfurter API, which publishes the European Central Bank reference rates. The ECB updates them once every working day at around 16:00 CET, so weekend and holiday figures repeat the last working day.
Are these live real-time rates?
No. They are official daily reference (mid-market) rates, not live trading prices. They are ideal for estimates, invoices and budgeting, but a bank or card will add a margin and fees on top when you actually exchange money.
Does the converter work offline?
Once rates have loaded, they are cached in your browser for 12 hours, so conversions keep working without a connection. If the latest rates cannot be fetched, the tool falls back to the last set it saved and tells you the date.
What is the mid-market rate?
The mid-market rate is the midpoint between the buy and sell price of a currency on the global market - the fairest single number. It is what you see on Google and in the news, but it is not usually what you get at a bureau de change.
